University of Miami Professors Protest

More than a dozen UM professors, lecturers and graduate students — some who didn’t want to comment for this story for fear of retaliation — raised the same concerns as Evans. Employees also questioned UM’s top-down approach in the decision-making process and what they say is a lack of shared governance. More than 500 faculty members have signed a petition seeking that they choose how they will teach.

A protest of UM professors has finally boiled to the top. The university seems to proceeding “hell or high water” based on top down decision making and over optimistic expectations that students attending classes on campus will follow highly regimented and extreme rules that are unlikely to be accepted by many of the regular students who live off campus. And many live in extended families in Miami. Evidence is that there has been a big failure in Miami (meaning Miami-Dade County) of the population, both young and old, to avoid social gathering. Professors are right to be very concerned for their health.

HEARD IN MIAMI-DADE

  • WE ARE THE COVID-19 HOTSPOT OF FLORIDA THAT IS THE HOT SPOT OF THE USA.
  • THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI WILL OPEN UNDER TWO MODALITIES–ONLINE LEARNING OR HYBRID (PART-TIME CLASS AND ONLINE LEARNING). SUCCESS DEPENDS ON THE UNCERTAINTY WHETHER STUDENTS ADOPT GOOD SOCIAL DISTANCING AND MITIGATING MEASURES. IF NOT, FAILURE.
  • COVID-19 INFECTIONS ARE EXPLODING EXPONENTIALLY, DEATHS ARE RISING AND HOSPITALS ARE REACHING THEIR LIMITS
  • RICH PRIVATE AND CHARTER SCHOOLS HAVE SCOOPED UP PPP. TO HELL WITH POOR STUDENTS IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS.
  • THERE IS NO TASTE FOR “DEFUNDING” POLICE HERE IN MOST MUNICIPALITIES. IN FACT, MORE THAN ONE MUNICIPALITY HAS ALLOWED THE POLICE TO REVIEW THEMSELVES. INSTEAD OF DEFUNDING THEY WILL ASK FOR MORE MONEY.
  • MANY RESIDENTS ARE NOT FOLLOWING MASKING AND DISTANCING. FAMILIES AND EXTENDED FAMILIES ARE PARTYING FREELY, INDIFFERENT TO HURTING FELLOW RESIDENTS.

Florida Covid-19 Explosion

What do we call this:

11,500 seven day total infections on June 13

80,300 cases seven day total on July 18

That is a 7 times increase in a month

FLORIDA: 14,000 Positive Infections and 156 Deaths Reported

What will it take for Gov. DeSantis and Mayor Gimenez to act aggressively–shut down, demand mask and social distancing. How long can they wait and how long will the business sector and Trump/GOP stop the irrational policies and political pressure.
